INDIA: What can be the connection between postal stamps and the historic year 1911? The year in which Delhi is celebrating its 100th year as the capital of modern India, it is also going to host INDIPEX 2011, the World Philatelic Exhibition.

Philately is the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. The exhibit is being organised by India Post, Government of India in association with the Philatelic Congress of India. “It’s a happy coincidence,” says Harpreet Singh, director INDIPEX 2011. Another happy coincidence is that, in 1911, for the first time in India, mails were flown by airplane, on February 18 from Allahabad to — five miles away — Naini in Uttar Pradesh.” This is one of the events we are commemorating in our exhibition,” says Singh.

THAILAND: Thailand to develop textile goods as 'green products'

Thailand: Thailand’s textile industry will be developed to become a sustainable or ‘green products’ industry in accordance with the government’s Creative Economy policy.

Presiding over a ceremony to launch a development project for Thailand’s textile industry, Permanent-Secretary for Industry Witoon Simachokdee said the ministry had assigned the Thailand Textile Institute to move forward the country’s textile industry development project to achieve the goal of ‘green products’.

US: Cotton shortage means prices to remain volatile

Cotton prices are likely to remain volatile, sector experts have warned, after the latest figures show this season’s cotton supply is almost sold out.

According to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), only about 10% of projected world trade of 8.3m tons is still available for purchase at this relatively early stage of the season.

MTMA: Foreign workforce key to more exports

GEORGE TOWN: The Government needs to relax its control on the supply of foreign labour to enable the local apparel and textile industry tap the US market when the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP) agreement comes into effect in 2012.

Malaysian Textile Manufacturers Association (MTMA) vice-president Datuk Y.H. Tan said the United States was a key market that absorbed between 35% and 40% of the RM8.9bil worth of apparel and textile products exported from Malaysia in 2009.
